Long weekend in Hallingdal 2026

From 16th to 18th October 2026, Storhelg i Hallingdal will be organised, a folk music festival featuring courses, concerts, dancing and festivities. Throughout the weekend, young folk musicians from various parts of the country gather for tuition, ensemble playing and stage experiences at Torpo and Ål.

The festival starts on Friday evening at 20:00 at Misjonsheimen on Torpo with a preview of the performance The Decade of the Good-for-Nothings with Vetle Springgard and Ådne Kolbjørnshus.

The courses start on Saturday morning. There will be instruction in the Hardanger fiddle, fiddle, langeleik, two-row accordion, jaw harp, lur, goat horn and willow flute, singing, halling and couple dancing. Storhelg i Hallingdal invites experienced instructors in traditional folk music and folk dance every year. In 2025, 82 people from large parts of Norway participated in the courses.

On Saturday evening the festival continues with a dance concert at Misjonsheimen featuring Vegard Hansen and Ragna Valde Sletten. At 21:00 Hallingdal Toraderlag will play for dancing at Hugnadheim.

Sunday there will be more rehearsal before the festival concludes with the performance Master and student at Ål cultural centre at 14:00. Here, participants and teachers get to showcase some of what they have been working on during the courses over the weekend.

Participants who wish to do so can stay at Torpo school. There is also reasonably priced accommodation about three kilometres away for those who do not wish to stay in a sports hall or classroom.
